Guided Reading:

The teacher reads the Supplementary with proper stress, pause, and intonation. Students listen silently at the first time. Second time they repeat after the teacher. They read in small groups.

 

The Teacher’s activity:

Preview the story: Before reading the story, ask students to predict what they think the story will be about based on the title and any prior knowledge they have about sea travel and rescue operations.

Reading comprehension questions: After reading the story, answer questions about the key events, characters, and themes to check your understanding.

• "Man Overboard" is a story about a young girl named Vasantha Murthy who is on a sea journey from her grandparents' place to Singapore.

• During the journey, there is a warning about a heavy storm, but Vasantha is not affected and instead goes to the ship's deck to enjoy the wind. While there, she witnesses a man falling into the sea and immediately cries for help.

• The captain of the ship takes the lead in rescuing the man, and with the help of his experienced crew, they are able to save the man's life. The captain then surprises Vasantha with a gift to appreciate her bravery, which makes her the happiest person on the ship.

• The story highlights the importance of quick thinking, teamwork, leadership, and appreciation in emergency situations.

 

Reinforcement:

Discussion questions: Encourage students to discuss the story in small groups or as a class. Ask questions like, "What do you think Vasantha did that was brave?" or "Why was it important for the crew to work together to rescue the man?"
