 The Comet (Poem) Teaching of Poem


Standard : IX,

Topic : The Comet,

Theme : “Comets are like libraries storing the record of our formation in tiny particles.. ”

Learning Outcomes:

E- 902 : Listening & Speaking-Listens to and discusses literary/non-literary inputs in varied contexts to infer, interpret, and appreciate.

E- 909: Writes short answers/paragraphs ,reports using appropriate vocabulary and grammar on a given

theme.

E-906 : Speaking Reads aloud and recites poems with proper pronunciation, stress and intonation.

Motivation and Introduction:

• Do you know about comets?

• Have you seen a comet?

• Are people in your house watching the comet?

 

The Comet by Norman Little ford is a poem describing the aesthetics of a comet. The poet shares his fondness for watching comets as they speed by. It is a rather simple poem and, in a sense, scientific too. The poem is divided into six stanzas, and each stanza has four lines. The rhyme scheme of each stanza is abcb

Guided Reading:

Teacher read the poem with proper stress, pause and intonation. Students listen silently at the first time. Second time they repeat after teacher. They read in small groups.

Teacher’s activity:

Before explaining this poem, the teacher also explains the new words with the help of chart. The teacher explains the lesson in simple words through video.

Student’s activity:

Volunteer students to briefly explain the content explained by the teacher in front of other students.

Presentation:

The comet travels speedily from the heavens. It neither stops during the day nor the night. The poet expresses how a comet in full flight is a spectacle to be watched.

Here the poet shares that a comet is faster than even a cheetah and has a very long tail. The comet is bigger than a mountain and very powerful and strong.

• The poet explains how the ice melts and from the comet’s exterior and turns into vapour. This leads to a trail behind the comet and becomes its tail.

The poet warns the readers of the possible dangers of what would happen if a comet comes too close to the earth. The atmosphere will shake and these shockwaves would cause earthquakes

According to scientists, the chemicals in the comet’s dust could have been the major factor in the creation of mankind. They are attributed as the factor that started life on the earth.

The poet says that he can not confirm how true this theory is as he does not own the right. However, he does confirm that he is not aware of a more beautiful sight than a comet in full flight.

rampaging (v) - going through an area making a lot of noise and causing damage

spectacle (n) - an unusual or unexpected event or situation that attracts

attention, interest

comet (n) - an icy small Solar body, which when passing close to the Sun,

warms and begins to release gases that are seen on rare

occasions from the earth as a bright line in the sky

trail (n) - a path often made or used for a particular purpose

quake (v) - a sudden violent movement of the earth's surface, some times

causing great damage (short form of earthquake).

 

Reinforcement:

Narrate how the poet describes the comet.

• What is causing the land to quake?

• According to scientists, how did life start on earth?

Why was the spider sure that the fly would come back again?

• What is the advice given to the readers?

 

Assignment :

Give a detailed account of the various effects caused by the comet to the earth.

Writing:

They write the writing practice by follow the teacher. They write book back exercises , fill in the blanks, write the answers for the questions.

Follow up work:

If you were a comet, what kind of benefits would you do to space, earth and the universe?
